Samsung 870 EVO vs Kingston A400
Between the Samsung 870 EVO and the Kingston A400, which is best?
Quick answer - The Samsung drive is better but may cost more.
This is not really a fair comparrison, The Samsung drive is newer, larger, and comes with better underlying technology. Realistically, neither of them are likely to fail before I end up replacing them with something better. Both of these drives are going to perform pretty well. Both drives are Sata. If you don’t care about the price, you may as well just pick the slightly better drive. If you wanted something faster you would probably want to pick up an NVME drive. Size is also a consideration but you can pick up either of these drives in multiple different sizes.
Storage technology used:
- Samsung 870 EVO: MLC - Multi Level Cell
- Kingston A400: TLC - Triple Layer Cell

These older SATA SSDs are getting to be very affordable these days. It really is terrific being able to buy so much fast storage at such a great price. Swapping out an old mechanical hard drive for an SSD such as one of these is one of the best things you can do to boost the performance in an older computer. This is true for both laptops and desktops. Laptops can somtimes be trickier to upgrade depending on how much space is available inside but it is generally worth the effort.
