RHEL - CentOS Alternatives

Now that CentOS is less of a viable option many people are looking for alternative RHEL clones to replace it. There are a few out there now. Some are brand new and some have been around for a while.

Rocky Linux

This is one of the first distros that we think of. It was created by one of the founders of CentOS and named after another one of the founders. It is probably one of the first choices if you want to directly replace CentOS.

AlmaLinux

CloudLinux created AlmaLinux as a replacement for CentOS after it was “decommissioned” or repurposed. They are already creators of another distro called CloudLinux OS and are now the creators of this one too.

Oracle Linux

This is another RHEL clone similar to CentOS. It has been around for a long time and was not just recently created like AlmaLinux or Rocky. It is not just a reaction to the demise of CentOS like Rocky or Alma are. This distro could be said to have stood the test of time. It is also produced by Oracle so depending on how you feel them that could either be a good or a bad thing. They do have somewhat of an incentive to produce a stable enterprise grade Linux distribution that their own software can run on.
